LIFE IN IRAN UNDER A CRACKING CEASEFIRE

Many Iranians woke this morning to a buzzing phone, full of hundreds of new messages from relatives that finally arrived after an 88-day internet blackout was finally lifted. One citizen told the BBC “When I realized I could once again send messages through Telegram, WhatsApp, and other platforms, the feeling was indescribable. Even now, as I speak, I'm on the verge of tears from happiness.”
I can’t help but wonder: why was the internet ban lifted today? After renewed strikes from the US against Iranian positions overseeing the Strait of Hormuz and high-stress negotiations over their nuclear program, it seems the April 8 ceasefire may collapse. (The word “ceasefire” seems to mean less and less every day.) If the Iranian people already rose up earlier this year in massive protests, why risk those same groups coordinating again with the internet? In addition, if the main reason for the blackout was risk of cyberattacks, is Iran risking US or Israeli cyberattacks against critical facilities?
The most likely reason may be business. Iranian people, even near war zones, have done their best to live their lives as normal and feed their families, as humans always do. Some international press photographed normal life in Tehran last month, ongoing in the face of war. If domestic business, already stressed due to sanctions, was unable to function normally for the last 88 days, the national economy must have suffered greatly. No numbers are available, though. There may be other reasons for the internet opening.
There are 93 million Iranians, the majority of which are not involved in the current conflict. They live, marry, and die in the same region populated by Medes, Persians, Parthians, Umayyads, Abbasids, and the Achaemenid Empire of Persepolis. The ruins and historical sites of these great civilizations are at risk due to the current conflict. We owe peace and open communication to everyone living today, We owe preserved history to everyone who will live after we’re gone. We thank you for being a part of ONE as we work, in whatever small way, to accomplish those missions.
