Large protests in the West Bank and Gaza Strip escalated following IDF raids and clashes that included thrown firebombs and live fire, risking ongoing negotiations.

Since the murder of an IDF troop patrolling in the Gaza Strip by an alleged Hamas militant in July, tensions between Israel and Palestine have grown steadily as Israel steps up military raids and the Palestinian people organize marches that are harassed or turn violent. This past week, hundreds of injuries resulted from clashes between protesters and IDF forces after a military raid in Hebron killed one unaffiliated man and injured eight others, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

It is unknown at this point whether this will escalate to the rocket war-level we saw in May 2021 (which inspired ONE's inception). The funeral marches of the five victims will be large events decrying Israeli control of Palestinian territory, and may erupt into new violence as past marches have. Many families will not be the same after this week.

The role of the Egyptian government is a unique factor of this recent spike in violence. Egypt is conducting shuttle diplomacy between the Palestinian authority and transitory Israeli government, meaning that the two parties are sending messages and preliminary demands to one another indirectly with Egypt acting as the courier. Egypt helps enforce the trade and travel blockade on the West Bank, so their role here is much more significant than a similar regional state playing moderator.

We at ONE continue to decry all violence in Israel and Palestine, and hope to find a worthy way to contribute in any way to the end of violence. Not only is the physical history and culture endangered every time violence escalates, but ordinary, innocent families lose a member forever, or incur medical needs that derail their lives. We support any diplomatic attempts and hope that communication channels through Egypt prevail.
